Senior Embedded Software Engineer

Position Summary:

As a member of the Firmware engineering team, the Senior Embedded Software Engineer will be a key contributor to our applications running on our BrainOS platform.  This job is highly technical with hands-on coding and testing, working closely with the hardware and helping to debug robotics systems.  In addition, the Senior Embedded Software Engineer will be expected to engage in discussions and collaborate with a diverse range of teams.  This includes close cooperation with product management, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, and other software teams.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Design, implement, and maintain embedded software features and services, ensuring high quality and performance
  • Provide technical leadership and drive best practices for code development, review, testing, and deployment that will ensure high quality releases to production
  • Help resolve production and customers issues and engineer long-term solutions through triage and root cause analysis and data analytics
  • Collaborate across disciplines and teams (Hardware, Firmware, Cloud, Autonomy) to build a cohesive system capable of running on multiple robot platforms
  • Collaborate with external partners to drive discussions and features, gather data, and conduct investigations
  • Encourage and facilitate technical discussions, ensure deadlines are met and drive higher performance solutions
  • Mentor junior engineers by providing guidance on best practices, design principles and coding standards
  • Perform other duties and projects as assigned

Education and/or Work Experience Requirements: 

  • BS or graduate degree in computer science or electrical engineering
  • 5-8 years professional experience in software development for embedded systems
  • 5-7 years of demonstrated software engineering/coding skills, specifically in C/C++, Python 3, Linux
  • Understanding of CAN, I2C, SPI, Ethernet, USB buses
  • Strong skills in embedded systems (e.g., JTAG, GPIO, Interrupts, timers, memory)
  • Familiarity with release management and versioning
  • Familiarity with test automation for embedded software

Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Other Characteristics: 

  • Experience in autonomous vehicles, robotics, or related industry
  • Experience with ARM Cortex microcontrollers
  • Experience with real-time operating systems
  • Experience developing in Linux-based environment
  • Excellent technical and analytical skills
  • Excellent communication skills

Things that make a difference:

  • MS in computer science, software engineering or a related field
  • Experience with robotic software development or working with robotics-related technologies
  • Understanding of CI/CD pipelines and related tools (e.g., Jenkins, GitLab CI/CD)
  • Experience with Github, JIRA, and Jenkins tools for source control, tracking, and testing
  • Understanding of Agile methodologies
  • Experience in all phases of the software development lifecycle

Salary Range:

The anticipated salary range for candidates who will work in San Diego, California is $133,565 to $161,684. The final salary offered to a successful candidate will be dependent on several factors that may include but are not limited to the type and length of experience within the job, type and length of experience within the industry, education, etc. Brain Corp is a multi-state employer and this salary range may not reflect positions that work in other states.
